My Mom and I love to go on walks and usually we go several times a day. And I have to say, I find her to be rather comical when it comes to her fear of snakes... Any time I even slightly make a sudden move she always presumes the object in my way to be a snake 😂!
I don't think she's alone in her fear of snakes. I mean how many of us encountered a surprise visit from a snake and had a good experience?! Eve knows what it is like to have a surprise visit from the craftiest snake of all time, and the rest of humanity in our fallen nature can vouch for her that things didn't seem to go too well...
Let's take a look together in Genesis 3:1-7, where we find a talking serpent that just so happens to be Satan himself. Pay close attention to verse 4, where we get an insight into Satans M.O.
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths." (ESV)
Did you catch what Satan did to Eve in verse 4? He lied to her. Don't believe me? Let's just take a look back at Genesis 2:17 where God tells Adam, "but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Both Adam and Eve found out the hard way that Satan can never be trusted. Take a look at what the gospel of John says about him, "...He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44) Both the Old and the New Testament affirm Satan's identity to be deceitful, lying, murdering, and completely untrustworthy.
Here is what we can learn about Adam and Eve's mistake: we have to put our trust in God ALONE and lean not on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). Satan will come to us through the culture, through doubts and false teachers. So the next time you are reading your Bible, take time to highlight the attributes of God, learn about his impeccable and trustworthy character. Grow in your love and trust in God by reading the Bible, praying to Him, and inviting Him into every activity of your life.
Sadly, death has come as a curse unto all of us because of the first sin of Adam. We see that God's Word held true... and the devil, well he was a liar to the rotten core. Luckily in Christ, we have hope for everlasting life with God to come. Just remember- that Satan is a liar that comes to seek, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).
