It is hard to believe that God will take care of all of our needs. In this life we have so many dreams that can take hold of our hearts and turn into idols. For some of us we struggle to be content in our singleness, content in our marriage, content in our financial situation or our job... and the list goes on and on.
And if you are anything like me, the reality is that our discontentment rarely makes it to the feet of Jesus. We bring it to him every once in a while, but deep down we know that we struggle to let go and trust in his plan. Often times that leads us to just make the decision to act out in sin.
A long time ago in the garden of Eden, God gave both Adam and Eve everything that they needed to be fully loved, fully seen, and fully satisfied in him. Let's take a look at Genesis 3:1-7 and watch as discontentment turns into sin.
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths." (ESV)
We can easily find ourselves shaming Adam and Eve for messing up so bad. How could they not see that they had everything in God and they didn't need to disobey the one rule God gave them?
Sometimes it just takes a little bit of questioning, doubting, and lie believing to get us into a place where we no longer trust that God has a sovereign and good plan for us. It is so easy to let little thoughts get out of control.
For those of us that find ourselves struggling with mistrust or unbelief that God has a good and perfect plan for you in Christ, stop what you are doing and go to God in prayer. Lay everything out before him. Make your worries and sinful desires known to God. Prayer is meant to be confessional, so allow yourself permission to feel the discomfort of bringing your darkest parts to God. Christ is interceding on behalf of you (Romans 8:34)!
Take a look at this good news from Ephesians 1:3, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places"
Right now as we speak, you are in possession of every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. When you became a believer, you became an heir of God himself! When you struggle with contentment, remember to look up! Pray earnestly for God to show you just how blessed you are in Him.
In Christ,
Taylor
